This is a route I have ridden on Christmas Eve a
few times, with slight variations, over the years. Set
in the White Peaks the rolling hills give some good
riding combined with some great scenery. The
majority of the riding on this 19mile loop is not too
difficult but the conditions can make it hard going
in places. There are a few of technical bits dotted
around that give a good overall mixture to the ride.
1. The ride starts from the Bakewell Agricultural
Business Center (GR222685). Ride along the
entrance/exit road, away from the center of
Bakewell keeping the river on the right. Follow the
road right, over the bridge, and onto the junction
with the A6. Turn left onto the A6 then after about
50m, on a slight right hand bend, turn right up the
lane signed as a dead end (GR223676).
2. After climbing the 'S' bend ride straight on, past
the lead jacket on the right, then follow the track

Continue along the track, as it bears to the left, to a gate
that leads into the left hand side of a field. Through the
gate climb on the grass, keeping to the wall on the left, to
the gate at the road. Turn left and follow the road, going
straight on at the crossroad, with Noton Farm on the left.
After going through the dip in the road go straight on
through the gate into the field, don't follow the right hand
bend in the road (GR216662).
3. Ride along the muddy double track on the right hand
side of the field and then through the gate into the next
field. Continue along the right hand side of the second
field, which can be a bit muddier than the first, towards
the farm buildings on the far side. Just before the old
trees near the buildings follow the signed BW through the

4. In the next field ride along the fence on the left to
the metal gate with the wooden Bridleway (BW) sign.
Turn left through the gate and follow the singletrack
trail down through some rooty, rocky switchbacks to
the bridge by the weir at the bottom. Climb the
tarmac lane between the hedges and continue along
it till it ends at a junction with the main road. Turn left and follow this road to
the crossroads at the church in Youlgreave . Go straight across and down the
lane on the right of the church. At the fork in the lane take the left. Just after
the footpath sign on the left, where the lane turns right, take the track off to the
left along the side of the house. At the bottom go through the gate and take
the bridge over the stream (GR215641).
5. Turn left onto the gravel path and follow this along the side of the river. Climb the,
now tarmac, path as it turns right away from the stream. Continue straight ahead, past
the caravan park on the right, to the gate near the house. Through the gate turn left
along the track to the road. Turn right on the road and in short while, just after the BW
sign on the right, turn left through the gate and into the field (GR226635).
6. Ride the muddy ruts that soon give way to a grassy track
and go straight on to the gate in the trees. After the gate drop
down hill and to the right on the tight singletrack. This opens
out onto grassy track that descends left to a double gate over a
stream. Climb away from the gate to the top right corner of the
field that leads onto the 'B5056'. Turn right onto the road and
follow it for a short way to the next junction, then turn left and climb to Birchover village.
The climb winds it's way up to the village passing a water trough then the millenium
sculpture. Around the left hand bend ride past the Red Lion pub, public toilets and bus
stop. Just before the chapel, turn right (GR239622).
7. Follow the road straight ahead, out of the village, then start to climb. At the junction
near the top of the climb turn left, the track then takes a few turns through the farm
buildings (GR240617). The track becomes tree lined and eventually starts descending,
dropping through a couple of corners becoming rocky, muddy, slippy and a bit rutted.
On the tarmac at the bottom turn right, following the road round the left hairpin, downhill.
Descend the road to the junction and go straight on down to the village at the bottom,
turning left at the junction (GR269620).
8. Ride along the long left then right bends, go straight over the 'Peak Rail' railway
crossing then on up to the road junction with the A6. Turn right then almost immediately
left on the B5057 (GR276628). Follow the B5057 around to the left until it finally
becomes perpendicular to the A6 and heads straight to the climb out of the valley.

Climb the steep road through a number of sharp corners till it straightens out. Keep
climbing the road till just after the last house on the left, with the high stone wall directly
at the roadside. At the end of the wall turn left on the tarmac that climbs the short way
back to the house.
9. After a few meters turn right and climb the thin rocky track that climbs away from the
house (GR284632). This tricky climb eventually levels off and becomes double track.
At the junction with the road go straight on, past the kennels to the left, and continue
climbing. This road very soon gives way to more loose climbing on a wide track. Follow
the 'S' bend into the woods then on to the junction with the road. Go straight ahead on
the road (GR292654) then across then crossroad onto a section of rough broken road.
At the next crossroad turn left (GR296673) and descend on the road to the left hand
bend at the top of the woods (GR287681).
10. Turn right onto the track halfway round on the outside of the bend. Follow the main

track as it winds down Beeley hill. The track straightens as it descends, giving
way to tarmac at the farm. Drop down hill on the tarmac to the junction at the
bottom then turn right. Over the bridge with the traffic lights climb past the car
park entrance on the left and ride on through Chatsworth park. Descend right
/ left past the entrance to Chatsworth House, on the right, then turn left into
Edensor (GR251700).
11. Climb through the picturesque village taking the right where the road
forks. Follow the road past the 'Not Suitable for Motors ' signs and on to the
end of the tarmac. Climb straight ahead on the rough track leading into the
trees, not right through the gate. This track continues up through the trees
for some way until it comes to a tarmac lane, turn left. The lane soon starts to

descend, coming to a track on the left at the top of Manners wood.
12. A couple of meters past this track turn left on the BW into the woods
(GR227694). Follow the rooty, rocky track down to the crossroad in the trail.
At this junction go straight on and keep descending. The trail at this point
can get a bit muddy, but in a fun slippy kind of way. Keep going straight on
down hill past the golf course finally coming out to the road. Turn left and
descend to the junction. Turn left and follow the long right hand bend down
hill. Just before the monument junction by the bridge in Bakewell turn left and
then look out for the right turn back to the Agricultural Center car park.
This route can be plotted on OS Landranger 119.
