The trip to Coed-y-Brenin was accompanied by hot muggy weather.  Without much of a breeze riding was
going to be hard work.  The midges liked it though as I found when I got eaten waiting for everyone to turn
up.  As with last year the turn out wasn’t high, but it’s school holidays again so a lot people had previous
engagements.  The four of us
who were there were up for a bit
more of a ride than advertised so
we set off on the Red Bull with a
plan to follow that up with the
MBR.  The first climb proved how
hot it was as the sweat started
pouring off us.  While we were
moving forward we created our
own cooling breeze by but once
we stopped it was like a sauna.
This being the case we kept up a
steady pace and didn’t hang

round for too long.  The lap of the Red Bull still proved fun with some great rocky descending and some
fast single track.  Near the end we came across a new section of track in the form of a traverse on large
boulders.  It had a different feel to the rest of the loop and could be a little tricky in places for some.  This
led on to the top of the first descent of the MBR and a final blast on some fast singletrack on our way
back to the car park.  When we got back to the cars I noticed that Carl, Odette and Jim had turned up.
A note had been left on my car explaining they
were on the Sport Route and would meet us for
the second ride.  After waiting round of half an
hour we decided to split.  Paul, Jim and Colin were
happy to go round the MBR on their own while I
would wait and take Carls less experienced group
round the Red Bull.  For the rest of the wait I put
my feet up in the back of my estate and had a little
siesta.  It took a bit longer than I expected for the
too arrive but the reason was soon explained.
Odette had crashed about ¼ of the way round the
Sport Route and although she was unharmed, the
rock her bike had landed on managed to sheer the
valve clean off of her rear shock.  That meant
6miles on bottomed out rear suspension, not fun
and terminal for the days riding.  We
stood around for a while swapping
damage stories then decided the best
thing to do would be pack up and go
home, hoping for better luck next time.
