Me, Paul, Paul T. and Sabine did a loop of the Marin Trail in Gwydyr Forest, near
Betws-y-Coed the weekend after doing Helvellyn. We thought we would show Sabine
that there was more to mountain biking than....well....mountains. Time to give her a fix of singletrack. As the pictures
show, the weather wasn't as good as the previous week but at least the rain stayed in the clouds while we were riding.
The ground was wet, but we have had a very good summer so I was looking forward to some slippy rocks and mud
under my wheels. Again the trail didn't disappoint as it caters for a wide spread of experience. The singletrack is not to
technical and so is good for beginners, the more experienced can get as much enjoyment out of the same trails by
simply riding them faster. The firetrack sections in between were used to bunch back up, swap stories of nailed corners

single track. I can't wait. I have heard the rumours, and did notice last time I was there,
that the is quite a bit of new singletrack being built (25 Oct 03). The old trails are good
but with the experience the trail pixies have got the new stuff should be even better. I will
definitely give a review of it here once it has been finished and I get chance to ride it.
October 2004
I took a camera with me
again when we rode the
many times
before but this
time he was with
his spangley
new Giant (a
ride on his first
full-sus). We
had just missed
the morning rain
so things were
slippery again,
strangely the same as last year, but with a bit
more sun. The new trail has been there for a
while now and it is the first thing you ride, a
nice singletrack climb out of the car park.
Don't worry though, it doesn't cut out too much
of the long firetrack climb to the top. It was a
critical day for Sabine as she had done the
first climb in one go last time, when we were
here with Trev. There were no rest stops
allowed this time (her rule, not mine). 20mins
later we were at the top of the first descent. I'll
have to start watching my back soon. With the
rest of the loop to go it was
time to kick in the fun gear
and enjoy. A great ride
followed finishing with the
fantastic final descents,
halfway down which a
buzzard tried to take Maca
out. After telling us about
that incident we were told how much he loved his new bike, which by the smile on his face was a lot. It was then back to
the car park to get changed in the rain and go home muddy, tired and happy.
and near misses, and to prepare for the next
section of single track.
This is one of our favourite night riding venues. I
missed the first ride this year with the MTBWales
lads, but another night ride is planned for the end
of November, start of December. Hopefully we will
get some nights like last year when there was
frost on the ground, a clear sky and a full moon.
There's not much thats tops riding firetrack by the
