This fun little mountain bike route starts at Patterdale YHA. It's about 9
miles long and circles Birk, Sleet and Place Fells along the edge of
Ullswater and back through Boredale. The trail by Ullswater is undulating
with only a little carrying in places. It is fun and technical, with sections to
have a play on. The only one significant climb is out of Boredale but even
this is rideable till the last short section and carry to the top.
1. Turn right out of the YHA car park
(GR398157) onto the A592 towards
Grisedale. After 1/3mile turn right on the
wide track, by the buildings on the right
which are set back from the road
(GR394161). Cross the bridge and then
dismount for the farmyard and cafe.
2. Once through the yard turn left onto the
BW (GR398163). For the next few miles it
is simply a case of following the main trail.
At the start don't take either of the two
tracks off to the left. The technical riding
starts as the trail drops right through a

that most stood back and encouraged stupidity anyway.
3. At the end of the trail turn right onto the tarmac road
(GR424195). Follow the road, turning right at the next two
junctions, for an easy spin up to the bottom of the only real
climb of the ride (GR419170).
4. The tarmac finishes at two gates. Go through the gates
and follow the trail that climbs up the right hand side of the
valley. This trail is very climbable but gradually gets steeper
until the last 50 meters or so where some carrying is required.
Some discussion was had about whether it would be ridable
downhill. I might have a go with my full-sus and flats one
day..... perhaps. Follow the trail up to the small plateau
(GR409158).

5. Straight on, at about
10/11o'clock, you will see
a little gully dropping
down into the valley.
Follow the track into this
gully. After a sharp little
drop the track comes out
onto a little gravely
plateau that is followed
directly by a split in the
trail (GR407158). The
BW is the steeper track
on the left, the right hand
being a footpath. Follow
this fast, grassy track all the way to the road at the bottom.
tight, steep rock section. What follows are a series of short climbs and
descents of various technical difficulty, the hardest of which will test the
best. There is one definite carry up some steep steps and, depending on
your ability, a number of short sections you may have to push or carry up. Saying that
Sabine was a novice on this trail at the time and enjoyed it for what she could ride. Keep
your eyes out for walkers here as there is a ferry trip which drops off at the far end of the
trail. This trail is made of lots of little sections so they won't upset your enjoyment, I found
6. Turn right on the road and follow it a short way to a gate. Before the gate turn left, almost back on yourself. Go over
the bridge and onto the A592 (GR405147). Turn right and follow the road back to the YHA. This route can be plotted on
OS Landranger 90.
